About Nicoma

OUR STORY

Alice Chandeler Headley Bell with Nicosia

Alice Chandler & Headley Bell with now deceased Nicosia daughter of Nicoma.

Nicoma Bloodstock was founded with the intention of informing Mill Ridge Farm of the happenings in the industry.  It was 1979 and the Thoroughbred business was changing dramatically as stallions were becoming its greatest emphasis.  My mother Alice Chandler and her friend Bill O’Neill thought the best way to do this was with a bloodstock agency.

Shortly after graduating from Vanderbilt University, I took the opportunity to assist Mill Ridge Farm and grew Nicoma Bloodstock as a full service agency advising farm clients as well as developing its own.  Nicoma has provided me the platform to demonstrate my ability and make a contribution.

Nicoma the Mare

Nicoma, the mare

The name Nicoma has a very special meaning in my family.  We are indebted to her and named the bloodstock agency in her honor. My grandfather, one of the founders of Keeneland left 286 acres and a portion of what is now known as Mill Ridge Farm, to my mother after his death in 1962.  NICOMA was one of the first mares she bought and subsequently produced five stakes winners.  On the strength of this record and after much agonizing, a business decision was made to sell her at auction in 1975.  The money received from her sale helped put the farm on a sound financial footing and enable Mill Ridge to be recognized worldwide today.

What makes NICOMA even more special is the fact that one of her daughters NICOSIA, trained by my mother who became the first woman to breed, own and train a $100,000 stake winner when she won the Matron Handicap (G2) in stake record time.  I am fortunate to have shared that moment as NICOSIA’s groom.

I feel honored to have the opportunity to associate with so many leading owners/breeders, assisting them with different aspects of their business.  Providing them with the success they deserve is very rewarding. The ultimate satisfaction however, is breeding the racehorse and in association with our clients we have had wonderful success as mating consultants and purchase of broodmares.  The results have been extraordinary with many G1 winners. Nicoma’s endeavor is to give 100% professional expertise and advice to our customers in hopes that they get as much enjoyment and satisfaction as we do from the horse business.
