Our Story Nicoma the Mare
The name Nicoma has a very special meaning in my family. My grandfather, Hal Price Headley, one of the founders of Keeneland left 250 areas and a portion of what is now known as Mill Ridge Farm, to my mother Alice Chandler after his death in 1962. Nicoma was one of the first mares she bought and subsequently produced five stakes winners. On the strength of this record, and after much agonizing, a business decision was made to sell her at auction to Tom Gentry. Basically, the money received helped put the farm on a sound financial footing and enabled her to create the Mill Ridge that is recognized worldwide today. Unfortunately Nicoma's end was rather sudden as, after being shipped to Maryland to be bred to Northern Dancer, she sadly died of strangles. We are indebted to her and named the bloodstock agency in her honor.
What makes her even more special is the fact that one of her daughters, Nicosia, trained by my mother, made her own unique landmark. She enabled Mom to become the first woman to breed, own and train a $100,000 stake winner when she won the Matron Handicap (G2) in stake record time. I am fortunate to have shared that moment as NICOSIA's groom. Nicosia just left us in January of '06 for greener pastures at the great age of 34. We shall miss her.
Nicoma Bloodstock is set up in conjunction with Mill Ridge Farm, which means that as a team we can offer the full spectrum of equine services whatever the various needs of the clientele are. Our objective runs parallel to Nicoma's herself, when she gave her all to produce five superior racehorses. We endeavor to give 100% professional expertise and advice to our customers in the hopes they get as much enjoyment and achieve as much success and satisfaction as we do from the horse business.
