Broodmares

Public sales provide the best source of opportunity considering the supply available.  Nevertheless, there is the occasional opportunity or specific directive to pursue private purchases and we involve ourselves in this area as well. Recently, one of these occasions was for Jim Miller for whom we privately bought a couple of mares in foal to Tapit.  The result from the sale of these offspring was very rewarding.

In 2012, POWER BROKER won the FrontRunner S. G1 and he was the result of a public purchase of the mare SHOP AGAIN from the 2007 Keeneland November Sale where we teamed up with Tolie Otto.  EASTER BUNNETTE the dam of 2012 Horse of the Year HAVRE DE GRACE, was also a public purchase from the 2003 Keeneland November Sale where we teamed up with Nancy Dillman.  In all, we have had extraordinary good fortune working with our clients to either build a program based on broodmares or continue to enhance and evaluate their existing program.  Below please find a sample of the results from our purchases of broodmares.

From 106 mares purchased by Nicoma:

13.2% of the mares produced a Grade 1 WINNER

  • 20% of the mares produced an earner of Grade 1 blacktype.
  • 24.5% of the mares produced a Graded Stakes WINNER.
  • 32.1% of the mares produced an earner of Graded Stakes blacktype.
  • 34% of the mares produced a Stakes WINNER.
  • 48% of the mares produced a blacktype runner.

Matings

Rarely does one have the opportunity to create an athlete as they do in the Thoroughbred business.  Like so much of the business, my belief is time provides an educated insight and allows you to navigate as well as possible.

2016 G1 winner OSCAR PERFORMANCE, 2012 G1 winner POWER BROKER and 2011 Horse of the Year HAVRE DE GRACE are just three of the examples of matings which we provided to our clients.  I will always emphasize that we work closely with the client and it is very much a team effort whether we win or lose.  The statistics indicate that you lose more often than not, yet it is my feeling you can make your luck and this starts with the matings.

Identifying the Thoroughbred athlete is an art in itself and I think some are more natural at it than others.  We all know that there is no precise formula and likely the greatest gauge is what we cannot measure and that is their heart.  Yet, you have to define the criteria in order to proceed and naturally the results define your ability.

We have had outstanding results over the years, and for us, conformation is only a portion of the formula which also considers the pedigree blend and where the horse might have been raised. For us, you get a general feeling immediately about that athlete and rarely do we try to talk ourselves into accepting the individual.  The last factor to consider is defining value for that athlete.  This depends on the individual and how obvious he or she might appear to be based on all the considerations.

18 SW (11.76%) – 45 had blacktype (29.4%)

Consulting

Each area of service provides a level of expertise which in my opinion contributes to the whole for success.  We consult for many of the leading owners/breeders in this country and are a sounding board to share our thoughts and vision. When you consider the level of investment one makes in the thoroughbred business then I think it is a small price to pay to retain an expert involved in all aspects of the business at a marginal cost of what a full time employee might be.  This is our approach to this area of service and our clients find it useful.

Appraisals

Nicoma Services Appraisals

In my opinion appraisals are one of the most valuable tools that one can utilize because it provides an outside opinion.  Naturally, this opinion needs to be from somebody you regard and trust in order to provide guidance.  We have been fortunate to provide appraisals for many of the leading operations each year including such luminaries as Juddmonte Farms and Darley Stud.  Appraisals can be extended to provide more depth such as a business plan and this is a service we provide to George Strawbridge.   Naturally, law firms or banks find our appraisal service invaluable and we are happy to assist them when requested.

Expert Witness

The roll of an Expert Witness is intriguing to me.  I have grown to have tremendous regard for the time and effort that lawyers commit to each case.  My goal is to always provide guidance on the facts and to assist in determining the “right versus wrong”.

Insurance

For me, insurance is only as good as the underwriter or the adjuster in the company that one might work with.  Thus, we have aligned ourselves with Ron Kirk Insurance and think he provides the most thorough coverage at the fairest price and we are proud of this association.
